Report Shows Ohio Foster Children Have Problems Transitioning Into Adulthood

aecf.org

New research by the non-partisan Annie E. Casey foundation shows Ohio youths in foster care have a difficult time transitioning into adulthood.

The first-of-its kind research shows moving in and out of foster homes, unstable placements, and leaving foster care without finding a permanent family creates barriers to their well-being as adults. The research shows 43 percent of Ohio foster youth obtain a high school diploma or GED, compared with 76 percent nationally. 36 percent of Ohio's foster care population is employed, compared with nearly 50 percent nationally. Brandi Slaughter is with the advocacy group Voices for Ohio's Children.

Slaughter says young people of color enter the foster care system at higher rates than their white peers, and are more likely to be placed in a foster home at least three times.
