An African-American state lawmaker and former Columbus City Council member is drafting a bill requiring police officers to wear body cameras.
Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles reports.
Democratic State Representative Kevin Boyce says 30 other states are considering requiring police officers to wear body cameras and he wants Ohio to be the 31st.
“The whole idea is that to better protect our law enforcement officers who work to protect us every day and also to continually find ways to strengthen the integrity of the process where police officers interact with the public,” Boyce says.
Boyce says he doesn’t know how much it would cost to equip all police officers with the cameras but he says the huge server required would be the biggest cost. He’s talking with police officers, lawmakers and others now as he crafts the legislation that he expects to introduce soon.
